Human Factors and Conflict Resolution

'Despite its complexity, healthcare goes right most of the time'

Human Factors

The machinery of care is complex. If it is to work effectively, the system needs to support people with the right skills and behaviours. This presents us with both a challenge and the solution.

At Iodem, we believe that improved safety and performance comes from an understanding of the adaptations which those operating complex systems have to do, to get the work done. It is also about ensuring the right ‘fit’ between people, their working environment and organisational culture.

In order to maximise the performance and safety of a system, it is essential to understand how that system impacts upon the wellbeing of those who interact with it, individually or as a collective group. The ‘Dirty Dozen’ refers to twelve common human factors issues that can impact upon a system’s performance and staff wellbeing. The Dirty Dozen is a concept developed by Gordon Dupont, in 1993, whilst working in the airline industry.

Iodem can provide a range of interventions at an individual, or at a team level and has established a significant track record in tackling these difficult issues with both sensitivity and effectiveness.
